What Are Electronic Keyboard Instruments

Electronic keyboard instruments are a general term for keyboard instruments that produce sound not through the physical resonance of strings or pipes, but through electricity — amplified mechanical vibration, electronic oscillation, or digital computation. The category spans everything from the theremin, electric pianos, and synthesizers to digital pianos and software synths.

This corresponds to the “electrophone,” the fifth family added in the 20th century to a 40,000-year history of musical instruments. In that its sound-producing principle is electricity rather than physical vibration, it marked a qualitative turning point in the history of instruments.

The Decisive Difference from the Violin and Piano

Placed alongside the sister series [The Lineage of the Violin] and [The Lineage of the Piano], the distinctiveness of this instrument family becomes clear:

  • The violin “reached completion” around 1700, and its basic design has remained unchanged ever since (masterpieces from 300 years ago are still the pinnacle today)
  • The piano spent 300 years continuously refining its keys, strings, and action, but the principle of “striking a string with a hammer” never changed
  • The electronic keyboard — here, the sound-generating method itself is completely replaced roughly every decade: mechanical vibration → voltage-controlled oscillation → digital FM computation → sampled playback → software modeling. It is the one lineage in which “the instrument’s inner workings are constantly rebuilt from scratch”

If the violin’s history is one of “chasing a lost golden age,” and the piano’s is one of “manufacturers’ technological progress,” then the electronic keyboard’s history is one of “continuous revolution in first principles.”

Five Periods over 100 Years

Period 1: The Dawn (1920-1950)

The theremin (1920) appeared as the world’s first electronic instrument played without touch, followed by the Ondes Martenot and the Hammond organ (1935). An experimental era built on the very idea of making sound with electricity.

Period 2: The Electric-Mechanical Piano (1950-1970)

The Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Hohner Clavinetelectric-mechanical keyboards that pick up mechanical vibration with an electromagnetic pickup and amplify it. They defined the sound of soul, funk, and fusion, and marked a transitional stage toward fully electronic sound.

Period 3: The Age of the Analog Synthesizer (1964-1983)

Moog (1964) synthesized sound through voltage control. The Minimoog (1970) made it portable and brought it to the masses. The Prophet-5 (1978) achieved polyphony and preset memory. The MIDI standard (1983) connected instruments together.

Period 4: The Digital Revolution (1983-1995)

FM synthesis in the Yamaha DX7 (1983) opened the door to the digital era. Samplers (Fairlight, Emulator) and workstations (Korg M1) captured real-world sounds. Digital pianos led by the Clavinova brought acoustic-piano tone into the home.

Period 5: Revival and Software (1995-)

VA (virtual analog) synthesis in the Nord Lead (1995) restored analog sound to prominence, and Eurorack / modular synths saw a resurgence. Eventually VST software synths replaced hardware, and music production moved into the DAW. Today, an electronic keyboard lives inside everyone’s PC or smartphone.

The Electronic Keyboard’s Peculiarity — “The Fake Drives Out the Real”

This instrument family carries a paradox found nowhere else:

  • The FM preset known as the DX7’s “E.PIANO 1” swept through 1980s pop as a stand-in for the real Fender Rhodes (a fake electric piano driving out the real one)
  • Sampling played back “recordings of acoustic instruments” from a keyboard, and in imitating real instruments, became something else entirely
  • Software synths modeled the analog circuits of legendary machines with mathematical formulas, producing “a Moog more stable than the real hardware”

“What counts as the real thing?” is a question endlessly reopened — the blurred boundary between imitation and creation is the very essence of the electronic keyboard.

And the greatest characteristic of this lineage is that the instrument’s inner workings are completely rebuilt with each generation. If the violin and piano have histories of “protecting and polishing a form once established,” the electronic keyboard has a history of “discarding one principle and leaping to the next.”
